THE BUTTERICKS Unfortunately, Thomas & Henry Butterick do not appear on any passenger lists; either on those published on the Internet, or elsewhere. Margaret is there, and is listed on the singlewoman section. But there isn’t a single clue about the Buttericks back in England, when searching the 1881 census for the whole country. Did they go or did they stay? Perhaps a clue can be found in the marriage of Margaret Butterick? Margaret Butterick m Thomas Bates 31 May 1864 Parish Church, Kaiapoi (No other details) Witness Henry Dalton and Jane Robson Perhaps this Henry was Jane’s then boyfriend? We know about Jane Robson, but Henry Dalton is also on the passenger list. If you recall, Henry Butterick was the brother lately returned from america? Is this the same Henry? For lots of reasons, some passengers did not travel under their true names, sometimes to avoid paying for passage. If Henry Dalton was Henry Butterick, then a return to the passenger list also shows a Thomas Dalton (Butterick), with his wife, Charlotte. The Christian names fit, and the Daltons are from Yorkshire, also. A search in New Zealand throws no light on the Buttericks, but the two surnames seems strangely linked, shown from these examples – Albert Butterick Henry Butterick married Frances Bourke b 4 April 1868 31 Aug 1892 at Holy Trinity Church, Christchurch bapt 5 Sept 1871 ages 26 & 27 David & Mary Born: Brookside & Kerry Sponsor Rachel Dalton Parents of Groom David Dalton & Mary (nee Cross) Witness L W Bourke & Ellis Mary Butterick David Dalton Butterick age 23 from Yorkshire arrived on the Crysolite arrived Lyttelton 31-7-1861 and with him Mary age 19. An interesting footnote to the above David Butterick - Born near Scarborough, he married Mary Cross. He bought a farm in Wakanui, and named it ‘Bainton,’ - after “the best farm he worked on in Yorkshire!” And there is always the possibility that the names were reported wrongly in the original account. Following the up in these parts, Thomas is listed in the 1851 census as being born in Garton, but no sign of Henry - perhaps he was out of the county, or even in America? Thomas turned out to be the brother of my husband’s g grandmother, Hannah Dalton. A search of the Dalton’s, going on the above theory, may shed some light on the link between the names, or uncover their true identity. This is what is known about Thomas and Henry Dalton, in New Zealand, so far: Thomas & Charlotte (nee Allman) Dalton’s children: Fanny Ann Dalton, b2 Jan1864, Kaiaopi island. Sponsors - Parents and Caroline Pashby (A Pashby emigrated from North Frodingham, Yorkshire, not far from Nafferton) William Dalton, b25 May 1865, Rangiora Swamp. Sponsors - The father, Joseph Johnson and Mary Burnett Elizabeth Margaret Dalton, b3 Sep 1868, Rangiora Swamp. Sponsors - Thomas Dalton, Ellen Nield and Jenetta Nield Frank Allman Dalton, b27 Feb 1870, Halkett West Coast Rd. Spnsors - Thomas Dalton and E.G. Pember Charlotte Ann Dalton, b17 Feb 1872, Halkett West Coast Rd. Sponsors - Thomas Dalton and E.G. Pember MARRIAGES Thomas Henry Dalton & Mary Magdelena Meng, marr 1 Jan 1902, Christchurch. Ages 34/26. Occ Blacksmith, birthplace Rangiora, parents of groom, Thomas Dalton, farmer, Charlotte nee Allman. Parents of bride, Carl Philip Meng, farmer, Elsie Catherine nee Ellenbury. Witnesses P. Schneider, J Scott (Coincidentally, one of the main Dalton occupations in this part of Yorkshire, was blacksmith). Leonard David Dalton & Edith Katherine Taplin Hirtzel, marr 1 May 1905, Christchurch. Ages 24/32 Occ Commission Agent. Birthplace Wakanui, Ashburton. Parents of groom, Thomas Dalton, farmer, Charlotte nee Allman. Parents of bride, Alfred Hirtzel, farmer, Mary Ann nee Taplin. Witnesses Amy Watson, Albert Watson Child of Leonard David Dalton & Edith Catherine Taplin nee Hirtzel Selwyn Alfred Dalton, b9 July 1905, Christchurch. Sponsors - Alfred Hirtzel, Thomas Polhmore Dimond Hogg and Mary Ann HIrtzel Henry doesn’t appear to have married, or done much of anything else in New Zealand, so far. The last mention found of him, is on the birth entry for the child of Margaret Butterick, as a sponsor. Perhaps he emigrated elsewhere or maybe he simply died? And once again, Barbara Snook, New Zealand’s answer to Wonder Woman - is there no end to this woman’s energy and enthusiam in all things ancestral? Her devotion to aiding others (not just myself) must surely make her one of the leading authorities on Surname searches in New Zealand. MARGARET BUTTERICK I am not sure where Margaret came from, having not yet found her in England, prior to their departure for New Zealand. What is known, is that she was listed as Margaret Butterwick, singlewoman, 22, Yorkshire, Domestic Servant. Also aboard the same vessel, was Thomas Bates, 19, Lincolnshire, gardener. Possibly the same Thomas Bates that Margaret married shortly after arriving in New Zealand on 31 May 1864 in the parish church of Kaiapoi. Parents names are not given. Thomas’ occupation at this time is Maltster, and the witnesses were Henry Dalton and Jane Robson. If you recall, Jane Robson was also among the group from Nafferton and Henry Robson is who we suspect of being Henry Butterick. Very little is known about Margaret and Thomas at this moment in time. The little we have is gleaned from parish records and the women’s electoral roll, 1893. The following children were born to them in New Zealand - Alfred Henry Bates, born 16 March 1865 in Kaiapoi (fathers name given as Thomas Alfred Bates), occ Maltster. Sponsors were Mary Bates and Henry Dalton Emily Margaret Bates, born 22 Feb 1867, in Kaiapoi. Sponsors: Annie Ball, Mary Bates and Henry Dalton The next mention found of them is an entry in the Women’s Electoral Roll, 1893: BATES Annie M, Geraldine, Lady’s Companion (possibly another daughter?) BATES Emily Margaret, Orari, Dressmaker BATES Margaret, Orari, Domestic Duties The investigation is ongoing but we are getting closer to finding out what became of them. What is interesting is that the Dalton name is so closely linked with the original emigrants and the name of Butterick. To further the link, two birth entries were found, for a Henry Dalton Bates, 1865, Christchurch, and Aubrey Dalton Bates, 1912, Christchurch. Where they fit in is not yet known, but you must admit it is rather a coincidence? Theories abound about their association, such as Margaret and the Dalton’s may have been cousins? Each time some new name appears in New Zealand, more questions are raised than answers. Does anyone know what the link was?
