THE WEBSTER FAMILY

Edmund Webster was born in Caston, Norfolk in 1807, the son of William Webster and Mary Farmer. Edmund had one brother, Joseph, born in 1808. Little is known about Edmund, apart from the fact that he was listed as a bricklayer on his sons marriage certificate. By the time the 1851 cencus was done, he was dead, leaving a widow, Sarah who was described as a pauper / washerwoman. There are 5 children listed to Edmund and Sarah, these being John ( 14 ) Lydia ( 12 ) Rebecca (10 ) Jonathon ( 8 ) and Edmund jnr ( 6 ). The next we find Edmund jnr is in 1871 when he marries a local lass from Potter Brompton called Jane Gill, daughter of Christopher and Anne ( Mennell ) Gill. Edmund is described on his marriage certificate as a widower, with one son, James. At what stage Edmund moved from Norfolk to Yorkshire is unknown at this point. His first wife is also unknown. James was born at Staxton, but his birth entry is elusive. Edmund was a blacksmith and after moving around a little, the family settled on the estate of Brandesburton, where the remainder of the family were born. After James, the first of Jane and Edmunds children was Jonathon, ( born in 1873, at Reighton ) followed by Charlotte ( 1877 ), Ernest ( 1879 ), Frederick ( 1881 ), John William ( 1883 ), Charles Henry ( 18? ), Edmund ( 1886 ) and Emma Jane ( 1891 ).

Not a lot is known of the siblings of Jonathon from which line we come, but Charlotte married a Tom Roling Marwood ( d 16/10/1920 ), Charlotte herself passing away 21/12/1944. Tom and Charlotte , along with John William lived in Stockton On Tees, whilst Charles Henry (d11/11/1945 )was a builder and lived in Middlesborough. It is understood he went to Canada for a time, but returned. It is doubtful that he married.  It is believed that some of the family of other siblings are still in the Brandesburton area.

Jonathon married about 1900 to Jenny Gray, at which time he was a farm manager at Gransmoor. Jonathon and Jenny had two children, Charles and Jenny. Jenny was killed in an accident in Burton Agnes, after being hit by a train. Jonathon remarried sometime between 1910 and 1913 to Laura Hoggarth ( b 1883 ) of Langtoft. Jonathon is known to farm several properties at Settrington, Lowthorpe, Burton Fleming and finally at Little Kelk. Jonathon and Laura had 5 children, the eldest being Tom Roling ( b 1915 ), Gwendoline Betsy ( b 1918 ) Douglas Haigh ( b 1920 ), Joyce ( b 1922 ) and Geoffrey Eustace ( b 1925 ).

Tom took over the farm at Little Kelk, marrying Mary Smith from Leeds. They had two children, John and Rosalind.

Betsy married David Taylor from Nafferton, who was a cattle dealer. They had four children.

Douglas died young, but left two boys and a widow Betty.

Joyce married Phillip Burwood Crisp, whom she met during the war when he was stationed at Lissett. They lived abroad a lot and had 3 children.

Geoff farmed at Creyke Farm, Kilham until he decided to emigrate to Australia in 1967. The family was on the last ship to go through the Suez Canal before it was closed. He married Patricia Smith, whose mother was Marion Ullyott from Park Farm, Harpham.

Geoff and Pat had four boys, all born in England and now all married with families and living in Australia.
